No way! I left in June. I hate writing essays and doing exams. I’m

Andy

Right. So ... pass me that spanner, will you ... what are you doing

Lesson 2 The road to success
Ms Hall
|
Come in, Darren. How do you do? My name’s Jo
Hall.
|
|
Darren
|
You’re ... Mr Hall?
|
|
Ms Hall
|
No, obviously not. Ms Hall, Josephine
actually.
|
|
Darren
|
Oh right, sorry. Er, yes, hello Ms Hall.
Pleased to meet you.
|
|
Ms Hall
|
Take a seat. Now, have you had the .. 1 .. of the college?
|

Darren
|
Yeah, it’s amazing here. It’s a bit like
school but a lot more exciting!
|
|
Ms Hall
|
So Darren, you’re interested in doing our .. 2 .. course?

Darren

Yes, I am. My dad usually buys old cars that
need repairing. I’ve .. 3 .. with
lots of different vehicles.

I see you got some GCSEs. Hmm, the grades
aren’t as high as we expect our applicants to have, I must say.

|
Darren
|
No well, I’ve never liked school much.
Engines are easier to understand than books. I mean, motors .. 4 .. more .. 4 .. to me than words on a page.

Andy Wilson? He did really well here. He felt

he was a trainee. And what are you doing at the Riverside, Darren?

I’m wasting my time frankly. The nearest I
get to a car is when I’m washing one. But I’ve had this idea. I want to work
for Andy, as his assistant, right? And I’m learning to drive, so I can .. 21 .. for him soon. And when I’ve
saved some money, I can start quad bike repairs because he doesn’t fix bikes.

I see. Have you discussed all this with him?

|
Darren

Well not really, I’ve only just thought of
it. But it’s not the worst idea I’ve ever had!
|
|
Ms Hall
|
Fair enough but you need to learn to walk
before you can run.
|
|
Darren
|
But I don’t want to walk or run – I want to
ride and drive! I bet you’ve never told anybody to be less .. 22 .., have you?

Unit 1
Lesson 3 Girls at the wheel?
We’ve all heard the jokes
about women drivers. They can’t .. 1
.., they can’t .. 2 .., they just
can’t drive, However this stereotype is .. 3 .. and the .. 4 ..
show that it isn’t true, certainly not about younger drivers. As a young .. 5 .. driver, I’m quite sure that I’m
more careful and .. 6 .. a safer
driver than most of the guys I know. Here are the facts.

Young
.. 7 .. drivers in the UK are now
the biggest .. 8 .. of young women
.. 9 .., .. 10 .. a .. 11 .. from
the department of .. 12 ... They
are also a danger to themselves: more than three times as many young men
drivers are .. 13 .. in car
accidents as young women drivers, although boys are more .. 14 .. to .. 15 .. the .. 16 ...

The report suggests that
we should .. 17 .. the .. 18 .. driving age to 18 in the UK.
This would make UK laws the same as in most of Europe. It also says that
better training and .. 19 .. rules
in the first year of a full .. 20
.. could mean fewer accidents.

.. 21 .., teenagers in the UK get a provisional driving licence at
the age of 17. They have to pass a theory test, which is not difficult – many
teenagers get 100% first time. The learner driver is then allowed to get into
a car and drive on .. 22 .. .. 23 .., except .. 24 .., day or night.

Learners are not allowed
to drive alone, of course, but their .. 25
.. can be anybody – a parent, a friend – who is over 21 and has had a licence
for over three years. Learner drivers do not have to have lessons with a .. 26 .. driving instructor, and there
is no law to say how many hours a new driver has to drive before the driving
test. Learners do not need a special car, but their car must have a red ‘L’
on the front and the back.

Learning to drive with a
friend or family member is not always a great idea. It is cheaper, but many
people argue and fall out with each other during driving lessons. It is also
easier to get into bad driving .. 27
.. when learning to drive without a .. 28
.. driving instructor. For example, many older drivers drive with one hand on
the .. 29 .. and the other on the
.. 30 .., which can be dangerous.

Young people who have
just passed their test can take off their red ‘L’ (for Learner) and replace
it with a green ‘P’ (for Probationary) – but they don’t have to. Many young
drivers enjoy the freedom of driving themselves, and they often drive their
friends around, at night or after parties. Even if the driver has not had any
alcohol, the passengers themselves could be drunk and noisy, and they could
disturb the driver. The report suggests a veto on new drivers carrying
passengers aged between 10 and 20 between 11pm and 5am. As young drivers,
especially male show-offs, drive faster with other young people in the car,
these new tougher laws would stop them doing this and putting lives – theirs
or their friends’ – in danger
