Man
Excuse me, are you the person who’s in charge here?

Thanks, I’ll need it. Right, sir, I’m afraid the manager isn’t here today. What’s the problem? Can I help you?

Man
Well, I don’t know. Shall I come back tomorrow? You don’t look very .. 4 ...

I see. Well maybe you’ll be able to tell me why my phone doesn’t work.

Spud
When did you buy it, sir? And where did you buy it? I don’t think this is a phone that we sell at Mob.

Man

Jess
I don’t know ... young kids? People like us?

Spud
Exactly. People who know about phones and don’t need customer service. So I’m left with old fogies who’ve still got phones the size of .. 23 .. ...

Jess
Oh, Spud, you mustn’t exaggerate!

I’m not! They can’t even remember how to .. 24 .. their mobiles ... I mean, come on!

Sorry to interrupt but my mobile won’t ring. Now, don’t try to sell me a new one ...

Yes, I think I do. See you later ....

Unit 3

Lesson 12   Money spinners

Hi Jess

How’s it going? Good to .. 1 .. with you the other day – we must do it more often. It’s nice to see your cute little face as well as hearing your voice – .. 2 .. it’s free!

We must think of more ways of getting together. I don’t regret coming over here to school though. I met some really cool friends at ISH. It’s too bad that the classes were all in English, but I’ve .. 3 .. .. 4 .. Dutch from my classmates. It’s hard to get .. 5 .. the .. 6 .. because these kids all speak English so fluently! When are you going to visit me again? I know you’re working hard and saving too, but try to find a way, OK?

Meanwhile, I’ve just got a job in a sausage factory! Don’t laugh! My friend Marcel got me the job – remember him? He was the guy that I worked with on the .. 7 .. while we were still at school – best job I’ve ever had! .. 8 .. wages, but we cycled out there in the early morning and sat peeling .. 9 .., listening to the radio, talking. The work was boring and hard on the hands, but we still had real fun.

The place that I work in now must be the worst factory in the world (get it?!). It’s .. 10 .. work too. They make these sausages which are horseshoe-shaped. Don’t ever eat one! I know what goes into them. There’s a .. 11 .. and I’m on the end of it, so my job is to .. 12 .. all the hot sausages into huge .. 13 .. and .. 14 .. them onto .. 15 ... The guys who work with me are all different .. 16 .. – a .. 17 .., an Australian guy, two .. 18 .. brothers. The one language that we all speak is English so again I don’t get the chance to practise my Dutch! But I got some good .. 19 .. from them about where to go when I finally start my .. 20 ... I don’t know why money seems to be such a big .. 23 .. these days. I guess it’s because we’re not kids any more. You know, I won’t be a teenager much longer – how weird is that? And I have to decide what to do next. Where am I going to go to college and what should I major in? I guess I could go back to the States but I think I’m going to go to college in the Netherlands. I really like it here. You’re not .. 24 .. on cars, because everybody cycles – it’s easy, cheap and keeps you fit. You’d love living here.

Lesson 13   Cornering the market

Jess
You see, you don’t really want to.. 1 .., do you?

Spud
No of course I don’t. I was .. 2 .. for months after school, and that was bad.

Jess
We were all surprised you didn’t work in your dad’s shop.

Spud
Been there, done that … got the T-shirt! No, this job at Mob seemed perfect. I’m really into phones. But I want to get a .. 3 .., .. 4 ..!

You’re getting bored there.

No, you’re right, I mustn’t. Sorry. Anyway, what’s this .. 9 .. that you mentioned?

Well it might be really .. 10 .. but it was something that Donny said the other day.

Spud
Where is he .. 11 ..? Is he still in Holland?

Jess
The Netherlands, actually.

Spud
Huh?

Jess
Only part of the country is called Holland, it’s a .. 12 .. mistake. But yes, he is. He’s doing factory work. But he’s had this .. 13 ../.. 14 ..export idea. He’s hoping his dad will help to get a .. 15 .. and when he does, we’re in business. Sound interesting?

Spud

Woman
How much is a bag – £4, oh that’s a good price. Shall I take three? No, I’ll take four bags. Thank you.

Don’t miss this chance! Perfect bulbs from the Netherlands, .. 24 .. to .. 25.. for ages. Four bags for you, sir?

Ah, we meet again. Can I interest you in some lovely bulbs?

Man
No, you cannot.

Spud
Fair enough – you have a nice day now! You win a few, you lose a few.

Jess
Honestly, some people! But this really is fun, Spud. And the best thing is, Donny will be here tomorrow with another .. 27 ..!

I haven’t seen her for ages. I’ll go back with you to get your phone if you like.

I decided to do some voluntar y work experience while working in a local café. I was not sure what I wanted to be or what I wanted to study. The experience came as quite a shock.

My f irst work experience was at a hospital in the .. 3 .. .. 4 ... I felt so ner vous when I was sitting outside this woman’s .. 5 .. at nine that first morning. Nobody offered me a drink or showed me where the toilets were. It was obvious that the therapist wasn’t .. 12 .. for me and didn’t really want me there at all. I decided to go back to the work experience .. 13 .. to tell them. I was upset but the man there told me not to worry about it.

The kids were brilliant, so much fun to be with and so .. 21 ... The teachers were amazing too, and incredibly .. 22 ... I was full of admiration for them all.
